Let me be direct: Bd3 was a solid move, but it wasn't actually the strongest option here. After Black played …g5, weakening their kingside, the most forcing move would be h4 — attacking that g5 pawn immediately and opening lines toward Black's king.
well.. if h4 was played, then black pawn to g4 would attack the knight and then if knight moves to d2 then pawn to f5 would be played.. so not much of an advantage there?

You've spotted something sharp — that line doesn't look great for White. But after h4 g4 the correct move isn't Nd2, it's Ng1. The knight retreats out of the attack and stays flexible, then h5 comes with tempo. So Black doesn't get the quiet …f5 you described.

Exactly — that's the key word: tempo. Black would need several moves to clear b8, c8 and d8 just to castle queenside, and meanwhile your h-pawn is already rolling forward. Black can't defend and prepare castling at the same time.
