Open File
An open file is a column with no pawns on it at all. Rooks thrive there because they control the whole length of it, so grabbing an open file with a rook (or two) is a key middlegame goal. It's a highway straight into your opponent's position.
No pawn stands on the d-file, so it is open. Both sides fight to control this highway with their rooks; whoever dominates it can invade the enemy position.
